Using the stars to predict the future or going to fortune tellers is not a new invention and has been around for thousands of years. In modern times, it has become ‘normal’ to believe in horoscopes, read palms and wear ‘lucky’ birthstones.
Pwofèt la (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) te di:
“Whoever goes to a Diviner (Fortune-teller) AND ASKS HIM about anything (whoever reads the horoscope also is included in this), his prayers will not be accepted for forty nights.” [Sahih Mizilman]
Pwofèt (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam) te di tou:
“Whoever goes to a soothsayer or a diviner AND BELIEVES HIM in what he says, has indeed disbelieved in what was revealed upon Muhammad.” [Musnad Ahmad and others]
There is an important difference between these two hadith – the first one says (asks him), pandan
the second hadith says (believes him). Both are a grave sin, yet both are highly accessible, especially in today’s world.
Horoscopes are featured in magazines, papers, on the TV and so the temptation to ‘just read’ them can be too much for some. It’s important to understand that any kind of fortune telling (even just for fun) would COMPLETELY nullify your prayers. This is because fortune telling is from Shaytaan.
Here’s some food for thought: “Allah created these stars for three purposes: to adorn the heavens, to stone the devils and as signs by which to navigate. Whoever seeks anything else in them is mistaken and does not benefit from them, and he is wasting his time and effort in seeking something of which he has no knowledge.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
