E leai se sosaiete na lagolagoina le manatu o se fafine ua faaipoipo i le lua pe sili atu alii i le taimi e tasi.
Tamaitai taumatau – Sili ona lelei togafitiga
Almost every society supported the concept of a man having more than one woman. Ae peitai, they did not limit the number nor did they provide the protection and maintenance that Islam insists on for each one. Islam came to set things straight. Women were given rights. Men were strictly ordered to treat their women with the very best of treatment.
Limit – Number in Marriage
When the verse was revealed the companions of Muhammad (ia i ona luga le filemu ma le manuia)did not run out with the attitude that they were going to get four wives all of a sudden. Some of them already had much more than that and these men had to divorce their wives, if they had more than four. So this was not an order to go out and get four wives. It was an order to begin limitations. And the first limitation was; No more than four.
She also has the opportunity to see how the other wife was being treated and go into a marriage knowing exactly what to expect from her husband. Ae uma ane, he must treat her in the same way as he is treating the other wife.
Women Need Husbands – Allah Provided the Answer
The prophet (ia i ona luga le filemu ma le manuia) predicted that in the Last Days the women would outnumber the men to a great extent. Today we are seeing this become a reality all over the world. Allah has already provided for us for this occasion. Ae uma ane, He is the One who makes it all happen and He already knew that many women would come into Islam in these days. He also knew many of the Muslim men would be killed or die at an early age, just as it is happening these days. These women all need husbands. Allah has given us the solution to all of life’s problems.
Women’s Right to Vote – 1,400 Tausaga ua mavae
We might add that Islam also gave the women full status as citizens over 1,400 years ago by giving her to right to speak and vote the same as anyone else. American women had to take their cause to the streets with “Women’s Suffrage” and were not granted the right to vote until just ninety years ago.
Women Keep Their Identity – And Their Names
E le gata i lea, Islam protected women’s rights to keep their identity and they were not considered property of some man. As such, they were no longer forced to change their last names to be that of their husbands. This is still the practice of Muslim women today just as it was fourteen hundred years ago.
Women Keep Their Property And Earnings – Men Must Share

FROM: ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS TO NON MUSLIM BY DR. ZAKIR NAIK
1. POLYGAMY
Fesili:
Why is a man allowed to have more than one wife in Islam? i.e. why is
polygamy allowed in Islam?
Tali:
1. Definition of Polygamy
Polygamy means a system of marriage whereby one person has more than one
to'alua. O autaunonofo e mafai ona lua ituaiga. One is polygyny where a man marries
more than one woman, ma le isi o polyandry, where a woman marries
more than one man. I Islama, limited polygyny is permitted; whereas polyandry
is completely prohibited.
O lea ua oo mai i le fesili muamua, why is a man allowed to have more than
one wife?
2. The Qur’an is the only religious scripture in the world that says,
“marry only one”.
The Qur’an is the only religious book, i luga o lenei lalolagi, that contains the
phrase ‘marry only one’. There is no other religious book that instructs men to
have only one wife. In none of the other religious scriptures, whether it be the
Vedas, le Ramayan, le Mahabharata, the Geeta, the Talmud or the Bible does
one find a restriction on the number of wives. According to these scriptures one
can marry as many as one wishes. Na o se taimi mulimuli ane, that the Hindu priests and
the Christian Church restricted the number of wives to one.
It was only a few
centuries ago that the Church restricted the number of wives to one.
three wives, e to‘aselau fo‘i avā a Solomona. The practice of polygyny
continued till Rabbi Gershom ben Yehudah (960 C.E to 1030 C.E) issued an
edict against it. The Jewish Sephardic communities living in Muslim countries
continued the practice till as late as 1950, until an Act of the Chief Rabbinate of
Israel extended the ban on marrying more than one wife.
(*Interesting Note:- As per the 1975 census of India Hindus are more
polygynous than Muslims. The report of the ‘Committee of The Status of
Woman in Islam’, lomia i totonu 1975 ta'ua i numera o itulau 66 ma 67 lena
the percentage of polygamous marriages between the years 1951 ma 1961
sa 5.06% i totonu o Hindu ma na o 4.31% i totonu o le au Musalimi. According
to Indian law only Muslim men are permitted to have more than one wife. O lena
illegal for any non-Muslim in India to have more than one wife. Despite it being
illegal, Hindus have more multiple wives as compared to Muslims. Muamua atu, there
was no restriction even on Hindu men with respect to the number of wives
allowed. Sa na o totonu 1954, when the Hindu Marriage Act was passed that it
became illegal for a Hindu to have more than one wife. At present it is the Indian
Law that restricts a Hindu man from having more than one wife and not the
Hindu scriptures.)
3. Qur’an permits limited polygyny
As I mentioned earlier, Qur’an is the only religious book on the face of the earth
that says ‘marry only one’. The context of this phrase is the following verse from
Surah Nisa of the Glorious Qur’an:
“Marry women of your choice, lua, pe tolu, pe fa; but if ye fear that
ye shall not be able to deal justly (faatasi ma i latou), then only one.”
[Al-Qur'an 4:3]
A o lei faaalia mai le Qur’an, there was no upper limit for polygyny and
many men had scores of wives, nisi e oo lava i le selau. Islam put an upper limit
of four wives.
only on the condition that he deals justly with them.
I le mataupu lava e tasi i.e. Surah Nisa fuaiupu 129 fai mai:
“Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women….”
[Al-Qur'an 4:129]
Many people are under the
misconception that it is compulsory for a Muslim man to have more than one wife.
Ile lautele, Islam has five categories of Do’s and Don’ts:
(i) ‘Fard’ i.e. compulsory or obligatory
(ii) ‘Mustahab’ i.e. recommended or encouraged
(iii) ‘Mubah’ i.e. permissible or allowed
(iv) ‘Makruh’ i.e. not recommended or discouraged
(v) ‘Haraam’ i.e. prohibited or forbidden
O le Polygyny e pa'ū i le vaega ogatotonu o mea e fa'atagaina. It cannot be
said that a Muslim who has two, three or four wives is a better Muslim as
compared to a Muslim who has only one wife.
4. Average life span of females is more than that of males
By nature males and females are born in approximately the same ratio. A
female child has more immunity than a male child. A female child can fight the
germs and diseases better than the male child. Mo lenei mafuaaga, during the
pediatric age itself there are more deaths among males as compared to the
females.
I taimi o taua, e to'atele tane ua fasiotia pe a fa'atusa i fafine. More men die
due to accidents and diseases than women. The average life span of females
is more than that of males, and at any given time one finds more widows in the
world than widowers.
5. India has more male population than female due to female
foeticide and infanticide
which the female population is less than the male population. The reason lies in
the high rate of female infanticide in India, and the fact that more than one
million female foetuses are aborted every year in this country, after they are
identified as females. Afai e taofia lenei faiga leaga, then India too will have
more females as compared to males.
6. World female population is more than male population
In the USA, o tamaitai e sili atu nai lo alii 7.8 miliona. New York alone has one
million more females as compared to the number of males, and of the male
population of New York one-third are gays i.e sodomites. The U.S.A as a whole
has more than twenty-five million gays. This means that these people do not
wish to marry women. Great Britain has four million more females as compared
to males. Siamani e lima miliona sili atu tamaitai pe a faatusatusa i alii. Russia
has nine million more females than males. God alone knows how many million
more females there are in the whole world as compared to males.
7. Restricting each and every man to have only one wife is not
practical
Even if every man got married to one woman, there would still be more than
thirty million females in U.S.A who would not be able to get husbands
(a manatu o Amerika e luasefululima miliona gays). There would be more
than four million females in Great Britain, 5 million females in Germany and nine
million females in Russia alone who would not be able to find a husband.
Fa'apea o lo'u tuafafine o se tasi o fafine e le'i fa'aipoipo e nofo i Amerika, pe
suppose your sister happens to be one of the unmarried women in USA. O le
only two options remaining for her are that she either marries a man who
already has a wife or becomes ‘public property’. E leai se isi filifiliga. All
those who are modest will opt for the first.
Most women would nto like to share their husband with other women. But in
Islam when the situation deems it really neccessary Muslim women in due faith
could bear a small personal loss to prevent a greater loss of letting other Muslim
sisters becoming ‘public properties’.
8. Marring a married man preferable to becoming ‘public property’
In Western society, it is common for a man to have mistresses and/or multiple
extra-marital affairs, i le fea tulaga, e ta‘ita‘iina e le fafine le fa‘alumaina, unprotected
life. Le sosaiete lava e tasi, peita'i, cannot accept a man having more than one
lead a protected life.
Thus the only two options before a woman who cannot find a husband is to
marry a married man or to become ‘public property’. Islam prefers giving
women the honourable position by permitting the first option and disallowing the
second.
E tele isi mafuaaga, pe aisea ua faatagaina ai e Isalama autaunonofo faatapulaaina, ae
it is mainly to protect the modesty of women.
2. POLYANDRY
Fesili:
If a man is allowed to have more than one wife, then why does Islam prohibit a
woman from having more than one husband?
Tali:
A lot of people, including some Muslims, question the logic of allowing Muslim
men to have more than one spouse while denying the same ‘right’ to women.
Let me first state emphatically, that the foundation of an Islamic society is justice
and equity. Allah has created men and women as equal, but with different
capabilities and different responsibilities. Men and women are different,
physiologically and psychologically. Their roles and responsibilities are different.
Men and women are equal in Islam, but not identical.
Surah Nisa’ Chapter 4 fuaiupu 22 ia 24 gives the list of women with whom
Muslim men can not marry. It is further mentioned in Surah Nisa’ Chapter 4
fuaiupu 24 “Also (prohibited are) women already married”
The following points enumerate the reasons why polyandry is prohibited in
Isalama:
1. If a man has more than one wife, the parents of the children born of such
marriages can easily be identified. The father as well as the mother can
easily be identified. In case of a woman marrying more than one husband,
only the mother of the children born of such marriages will be identified and
not the father. Islam gives tremendous importance to the identification of
both parents, tina ma tama. Psychologists tell us that children who do
not know their parents, especially their father undergo severe mental
trauma and disturbances. Often they have an unhappy childhood. It is for
this reason that the children of prostitutes do not have a healthy childhood.
If a child born of such wedlock is admitted in school, and when the mother
is asked the name of the father, she would have to give two or more names!
I am aware that recent advances in science have made it possible for both
the mother and father to be identified with the help of genetic testing. O lea
this point which was applicable for the past may not be applicable for the
present.
2. Man is more polygamous by nature as compared to a woman.
3. Biologically, it is easier for a man to perform his duties as a husband despite
having several wives. O se fafine, in a similar position, having several
husbands, will not find it possible to perform her duties as a wife. O se fafine
undergoes several psychological and behavioral changes due to different
phases of the menstrual cycle.
4. A woman who has more than one husband will have several sexual
partners at the same time and has a high chance of acquiring venereal or
sexually transmitted diseases which can also be transmitted back to her
husband even if all of them have no extra-marital sex. This is not the case
in a man having more than one wife, and none of them having extra-marital
sex.
The above reasons are those that one can easily identify. There are probably
many more reasons why Allah, in His Infinite Wisdom, has prohibited polyandry.

the above information is wonderful. i only want to know that if my wives die one after another ( like i got married and she died and after that i got married again) in this case how many times i am allowed to get married? are there any restrictions? faafetai.
I very much enjoyed reading the informative well structured piece about this issue but the problem is that we need to shed the light of what most men are doing when marrying women, they belive that marrying 4 wives is what every man needs to do but in reality there is few who can be able to carry this huge responsibity and this is a huge nicmo as u said when the ayat was revealed not all the companions went seeking for 4 ava. This improper conduct leaves.many families in disaster and women’s heart broken. While he is marrying and looking for other women he should help raised the kids with his wife and this will help in the hearafter as well. And i also would say to women that if you feel your husband is wisking away for a second wife just be patient as you will get your reward for it in the hearafter. Alahu-aclam
Very nice and good to read by Saffiyyah thanx
I think this is an interesting article as it displays the truth. I am not against what Allah swt’s words are because for me as a muslim that would be a shirk. However I do have one thing to say an its not a disagreement, yet a personal note on todays men and generation. Islam allows men to marry up to four wives on certain circumstances. But nowadays people are more focused on the one and only. Because its much more easier to have one woman an one man being together and sharing a family and a household rather than 2-4. We all know that. And women have the right to say no and reject their husbands wish to marry another woman and have a polygamous marriage. So if the current wife refuses than the man has two choices: to stay in his current marriage with just one wife and find happiness within or to leave and find another woman who will make him happy with one or more wives otherwise. It feels noce to have a husband who just wants all his focus on you and is fully committed, has his gaze lowered towards other women and just wants you by his side every day and night of his life. But there are some men who arent like that and thats where islam gives the limit of up to four wives within reason and circumstances.
Thank you for a very informative explanation. I agree 100%that woman cannot have more than one husband at the same time. Peitai, in ur explanation something caught my eye..that a Muslim husband must take care of their children..I was married to a Muslim (I was christian then converted before we got married) we conceived a son Mohammed Iqbal..11months after his birth we got divorce.. my son is 3 years old and his father hasn’t seen him since.. he married someone else and is living as if he has no child.. I have been providing for my son ever since Shukr to Allah that I have a job and a can do this for my son.. just wanted to add that it’s not solely men who provide these days, and I find it very common that Muslim boys marry christian girls and soon they divorce (in my opinion they just use the christian girls nowadays) I have four examples of this.. could u tell me why this is??
Intresting advise and discossion
Im like to marry a poor orphen girl.who needed my care..again inshahallah
Very sad that stupid people getting a big Jubbah and beard then studying Islam for 4 years or less then teaching Islamic rulings like this.
There is permisibility… but a lot of permissible things in Islam becomes Makruh or Haram at times. Same goes for multiple marriages.
I would like to shoot the men who leaves his wife of 30 to marry one of 16! For no other god reason than one.
LIKE THE EXAMPLE OF PROPHET SAW! IF A man married a 60 year old or 80 year old while they r married to 16 year old! And gave her her rights then I will see they r following Islam otherwise their low self worse than dogs…
Like the example of Prophet SAW!!!
If a man married to a women in Australia to a women 15 years older than himself and remained married for 20 pe 25 years then upon her death married again then the are following Rasul! (SA)
Shame on such stupid bearded men who stand up as our leaders then allow such crap. I guess they have to justify what they have done.
Wake up Muslim Ummah, while u chase women, younger, more beautiful ..u r wasting time u should be using to serve this Ummah, educate yourself further, raise your children as scholars of Islam.
Could write a book on this…
How much your nafs have strayed u but shaitan makes u feel u r doing Sunnah!
I am a little angry so not gonna check no spelling or Grammer u understand u understand, bad luck!
Lol
May Allah guide us!
I’m against polygamy and I was born Muslim. I have some doubt in my heart about Islam because of these verses about polygamy. No men can understand the great pain of a woman who knows that her husband loves and sleeps with someone else. In this era, people need to work so many hours to support a family. O lea, practically, it’s not possible to give enough time to spend having so many wives and children. There are many single men out there to marry rather than being 2nd or 3rd wife of a married man.
@Hmmm or whatever your name is…your comments was as if its coming from a learned but unfortunately you are not and not even close.
Muamua, Having more than one wife is Highly Recommended and not just permissible, this is the due to the verse in suratul Nisai verse 3 that you should marry any women, 2 pe 3 pe 4 but if you fear that you cannot do justice then marry one.
Lona lua, It can only be makruh or Haraam only if you knew you cannot do justice among your wives or you do not even have means to get married and you went ahead to do it anyway and there is a punishment for a man who marry more than one wives and do not do justice with them as Allah will raise with half of his body paralysed.
Lona tolu, You wanna abuse someone and not only did you abuse your fellow supposed muslim (that is if you are a muslim) but also use what Islam preaches to do so (beard). When the prophet (SA) said Abusing a muslim is a sin and fighting him is kufr. Hating any part of what the prophet brought is Nifaaq (hypocrisy) which Allah described as people who will be @ the deepest part of the hell fire.
I agree with you on the fact that one can marry in the manner that the prophet as married. Having a wife older than him like 15 years and didn’t marry again until she died or that he married Aisha(IFO) and married way older women while keeping her rights but that is not the only permissible way of getting married more than one wife as the companions who Allah has described as believers did not marry like that and the prophet didn’t forbid them.
O lea, Hmmmm…Be mindful of what you say without knowledge as Allah will ask you how you use every part of your body and they will testify against you. O lea, my advice for you is taubah (repentance) if you are a muslim
