How many times in your life have you said ‘I promise I will do such and such’ and then you break your promise? The reality is that the majority of Muslims break promises at some point – but this is not normal Islamic behaviour and nor should it be acceptable!

In the time of the Prophet SAW, Muslims were known for their promises. Their word was their honour and their honour was their life.  This is why the Muslims of old were so successful:

[Successful are the believers]…who are faithful to their trusts and to their promises.’
(al-Mu’minun 23:8)

Perhaps one of the reasons why the Muslim world is in mass humiliation is because we are no longer keepers of our word, and the fear of Allah has left our hearts:

“Oh you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do? Most hateful it is in the sight of Allah that you say that which you do not do”
 (Qur’an 61:2-3)

What’s worrying is that breaking promises is a sign of hypocrisy:

Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “There are three signs of a hypocrite: whenever he speaks, he lies; whenever he makes a promise, he breaks it; and whenever he is trusted, he betrays his trust.” [Agreed upon]

So the moral is keep your word so you may be successful!
