The knowledge of our lifespan is sure with Allah SWT and Him alone. Allah SWT grants life to who He wills and likewise, takes it away from whom He wills. No one can say for certain how long their appointed time here on Earth is. Whether you have thought about reaching old age or not, only Allah Most High knows what our state will be in the end.

The Prophet SAW made many references to old age, but always sought refuge in Allah SWT from the trials and difficulties of this time. Memory loss, joint pain, ill health, weakness, fragility, incontinence and the lack of awareness are all signs of a bad old age – may Allah SWT protect us all Insha’Allah.

The Prophet SAW advises us to make the following dua to protect us from old age. ..

It was narrated that Anas said:

“Ang Sugo ni Allah [NAKITA] used to seek refuge by saying these words:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ

الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَسُوءِ الْكِبَرِ وَفِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

‘Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-kasali, wal-harami, wal-jubni, wal-bukhli, wa suw’il-kibari, wa fitnatid-dajjali wa ‘adhabil-qabr (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from laziness, old age, cowardice, miserliness, a bad old age, the tribulation of the Dajjal and the torment of the grave.)'” (Nasai)

May Allah SWT grant us life for as long as it is good for us and protect us from the trials of old age. May Allah SWT give us a good ending Insha’Allah and help us preserve our independence and dignity to the end of our days, Ameen.
