Waking up on day 1 of Ramadan with the older two fasting, we established what fasting really means. Was it just about going without food and drink? Clearly not, according to the hadith. So using examples of one sibling teasing the other, feeling annoyed at a parent when being asked to do a choreIn all these situations we talked about the importance of remembering we are fasting first, before we responded.

Pranašas SAW pasakė:

‘Whoever does not leave false speech and evil deeds then Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink’ (Bukhari)

Our behaviour with others has a direct impact on our fasts.

So as the day commenced all eyes were focused on the older two completing their fast and mashAllah they did. With lots of assurances that, they could break their fast wheneverThe reward of Jannah kept Yusuf going. Alhumdulilah.

Day two began with a reminder of what all the knowledge we were seeking, was for in the first place. Looking at Surah Jumuah: 5

The likeness of those who are entrusted with the Law of Moses, yet apply it not, is as the likeness of the donkey carrying books. Wretched is the likeness of folk who deny the revelations of Allah. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk. (Surah Jumuah: 5)

They all pretended to be donkeys on their knees and I put pressure on their backs to make them envisage what it may feel like to be a donkey carrying a heavy load. That’s what we could be without understanding and applying the knowledge that we learn about this deen, as Allah gives the example of those who had the Torah.

Then came the good deed lentils. We tried a few ways to motivate them to do good deeds in this month and we stuck with little lentils. Every time they did a good deed they could see the deed as a small lentil they put in a cup. I chose lentilsAs indeed the deeds we accumulate should never feel like great things, pushing us to fill our cups more and more.

It really took off with Zayd who kept making up scenarios when he apparently did a good deed. Hmm! But alhumdulilah by the end of today he actually was the one with the most deeds with lots of helping, reciting surahs and salah.

May they continue to compete with the lentils and do lots of good deeds in this blessed month, amen!
