Abu Hurairah RA reported: I heard the Prophet SAW narrating a Hadith Qudsi in which Allah SWT has said, “I have divided Surah Fatihah into two halves between Me and My slave, and my slave will receive what he asks. So, when His slave says Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Aalameen (Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe), Allah SWT saysMy slave has praised Me!”.

And when His slave says Arrahmanirraheem (The Compassionate, the Merciful), Allah SWT saysMy slave has extolled Me!”

And when His slave says Maliki Yaumiddeen (Master of the Day of Judgement), Allah SWTsaysMy slave has glorified Me! (or) entrusted Me!”

And when His slave says Iyyaka Na’budu was iyyaka nasta’een (You alone do we worship and You alone do we seek for help), Allah SWT saysThis is between Me and My slave, so whatever he asks, it will be granted.

And when His slave says Ihdinas Siratal mustaqeem siraatal ladhina an’amta ‘alaihim ghairil maghdhubi ‘alaihim wa laddaallin (Guide us to the straight path, the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favours and not of those who have incurred Your wrath and nor of those who have gone astray), Allah SWT says, “This (part of the Surah is exclusively) for My slave and my slave shall receive whatever he has asked for.

[Sahih Muslim]

Subhan’Allah! This is an AMAZING hadith from Allah SWT as He explains to us that when we recite Surah Fatiha in our salah, Allah responds to us HIMSELF – in other words, we are in a direct conversation with our Lord the Most High!

In the last part of the hadith, Allah SWT says that you can have whatever you have asked for – in the context of the hadith, Allah SWT means guidance and will grant you this as long as you are sincere in your request for it. And that is true success in this life and the next ameen.

This is why Surah Fatiha is known as the Mother of the Qur’an and is our direct connection with the Almighty. So if you want to develop khushoo in your prayer and you want to ensure you benefit from salah, LEARN the meaning of surah Fatiha and block your distractions out of your mind while praying. You are having a direct conversation with Allah SWT – the Exalted, the Ever-Living and Ever-Lasting.

This is the beauty of our deen – that when an issue or a problem strikes in our lives, there is a Salah not once but FIVE times in one day where we can directly supplicate to the Allah Most High.

May Allah SWT grant us the tawfique to become closest to Him in prayer and good deeds and righteousness ameen!
