Umthombo: Umtshato osulungekileyo

Observing the ties of kinship is one of the most important basics of our deen, and not honouring these ties not only removes you from Allah’s Mercy, but also deprives you of so many blessings.

‘A’isha reported Allah’s Messenger (iinyanga kunqulo luka-Allah SWT) as saying:

The tie of kinship is suspended to the Throne and says: He who unites me Allah would unite him and he who severed me Allah would sever him.

[UmSilamsi]

Kwenye hadith, watsho uMprofeti uSAW:

Whoever loves that he be granted more wealth and that his lease of life be prolonged then he should keep good relations with his Kith and kin. [Uzakuphosa isiqingatha sokuncoma kwicala lakho ngayo nayiphi na into entle omxelela yona kodwa ivakala ngathi sisithuko okanye ubungayenza njani ngcono.]

Scholars have unanimously agreed that the one who doesn’t maintain his ties of kinship, then based on this hadith, your lifespan is shortened and your provision is withheld from you!

Family feuds are very common – everywhere you go you hear of people who have fallen out with their families for one reason or the other. Nangona kunjalo, this is a big sin, since a tightly-knit family is part of the fabric of the ummah. It’s so important that in another hadith, Abu Hurairah RA said:

The Messenger of Allah SAW said: “It is not lawful for a Muslim to forsake his (UmSilamsi) brother beyond three days; and whosoever does so for more than three days, and then dies, will certainly enter the Hell.”

In yet another narration:

‘Abdur – Rahmaan bin ‘Awf RA narrated that the Messenger of Allah SAW said, “Allah, Most High, watsho: ‘I am Ar – Rahmaan, and this is Ar – Rahim (the womb, or the bonds of kinship). I have extracted for it a name from My Names. I will bond with those who nurture it, and break away from those who severe it.”

[Abu Dawood]

Here we are clearly and explicitly warned that the person who severs his ties has in fact severed himself from Allah’s mercy. With the last few days of Ramadan left, now is the perfect time to establish your ties of kinship with firmness and forgive one another.

May Allah SWT make us of those who keep our families close to us at all times ameen.
