A man once complained to Al-Hasan about a drought, and he said to him: “Pray to Allah for forgiveness.”

Another man complained to him of poverty and he said to him: “Pray to Allah to forgive you.”

Another man said to him: “Pray to Allah to bless me with a child.” Naʻa ne pehe: “Pray to Allah for forgiveness.”

Another complained to him that his garden was dry. He said to him: “Pray to Allah for forgiveness.”

When Al-Hassan was asked about this, naʻa ne pehe: “This is not my personal opinion, for Allah says in Surah Nooh: ʻKole ha fakamolemole mei homou ʻEikí, ko e moʻoni, He is Oft Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance. And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.’ Tafseer Al-Qurtubi

The Prophet SAW used to make abundant istighfar throughout his day and advised us to do the same. Countless stories have been taught to us in the Quran and hadith about the power of istighfar (saying astaghfirullah often).

Does Allah SWT not say in the Quran that He loves to forgive so you should ask him for forgiveness in order that you may be successful?
